Brief

For my AS media coursework I was asked to design a magazine aimed at my chosen demographic in the aim to either develop or challenge common codes and conventions found within modern music magazines, such as; 'Q' or 'NME'. The purpose of this blog is to not only display the research which I have carried out but to also illustrate how I have projected and adapted what I had found onto a music magazine which I have designed.

Before constructing my magazine I had to carry out various tasks to aid me in discovering conventions and identify the way in which these were coded to appeal to different magazines target audiences'. These tasks consisted of annotating a front page, contents page and double page spread of two different magazines and then comparing the conventions found within both.

I had to carry out a Preliminary task which was based on my school leaflet. It was done to get more familiar with applying the conventions I had previously researched and coding them to appeal to teachers, students and parents.

In order to find out what kind of magazine I wanted to create I had to carry out research consisting of both qualitative and quantitative data which would help in choosing the demographic, music genre and aims of my magazine. Using QuestionPro I was able to develoop a questionaire and using social media platforms such as Facebook I was able to reach a larger audience, allowing my results to be accurate and more valid. After gathering my results I presented it using PowerPoint and I was able to create a clearer vision of what my magazine will aim to achieve.

Finally I was able to begin designing my actual music magazine. I had to keep in mind that I was designing at least four pages consisting of a front page, contents page and double page spread. Previous to my magazine I had to take all the research I gathered from tasks completed earlier on and applied it to the construction of my magazine, aiming to have it appeal to my target audience.
